Hey folks, Farmer Matt here. I’m thrilled to share some exciting news with you all: our farm has officially been certified organic for ten years. It’s a milestone I’m incredibly proud of, and I want to take a moment to explain what this means, why it matters, and how it benefits you, my valued customers.
What does organic certification mean?
When you see the word “organic” on a product or farm, it’s more than just a label—it’s a promise. Organic certification means that my farm meets strict standards set by the USDA or how we grow and handle our crops and livestock. These standards include things like:
- No synthetic pesticides or herbicides: We use natural methods to manage pests and weeds
- No genetically modified organisms (GMOs): Everything we grow is non-GMO
- Soil health: We focus on building healthy soil through composting, crop rotation, and other sustainable practices
- Animal welfare: If we raise animals, they’re given access to the outdoors, organic feed, and humane treatment
Maintaining this certification isn’t a one-time thing. Every year, my farm undergoes rigorous inspections and audits to ensure we’re sticking to these standards. It’s a lot of work, but it’s worth it to provide you with food you can trust.
A quick note about my farm vs. my products
Now, here’s an important distinction: while my farm is certified organic, not every product I sell carries that certification. Why? Because I source from other farms and vendors for many of the items I offer. While I carefully choose partners who share my values, not all of them are certified organic. I always aim to be transparent about this, so you know exactly what you’re buying.
How does this benefit you?
When you buy organic products from my farm, you’re not just getting food—you’re supporting a system that’s better for you and the planet. Here’s how:
- Healthier food: Organic produce is grown without synthetic chemicals, so you’re getting food that’s as natural as possible
- Environmental stewardship: Organic farming practices protect soil, water, and wildlife, helping to create a healthier ecosystem for future generations
- Support for small farms: By choosing organic, you’re supporting farmers like me who are committed to sustainable agriculture
What does it take to maintain organic certification?
Staying certified organic isn’t easy—it requires constant attention to detail and a commitment to doing things the right way, even when it’s harder or more expensive. Here’s a glimpse into what it involves:
- Detailed record-keeping: Every seed, input, and practice must be documented and available for review
- Annual inspections: A certifying agent visits my farm to inspect everything from my fields to my storage areas
- Ongoing education: I stay up-to-date on organic regulations and best practices to ensure I’m always in compliance
- Investment in sustainable practices: From natural pest control toorganic feed, these methods often cost more, but they’re essential to maintaining certification
Thank you for supporting organic farming
This ten-year milestone wouldn’t be possible without your support. Every time you choose organic, you’re voting for a food system that prioritizes health, sustainability, and transparency. I’m grateful to be on this journey with you, and I’m excited to continue providing you with high-quality, responsibly grown food for years to come.
If you ever have questions about what “organic” means or how my farm operates, don’t hesitate to ask. I’m here to help and always happy to chat.
Here’s to the next ten years of growing good food, the right way.
